FREECS has a lot of exciting events planned for this year! We have two exciting speaker series, a mentoring program
for undergraduate women in EECS research, and many more social and professional events.
Academic Survival Skills Workshops
About once a quarter we host a panel discussion on an important topic for graduate students and junior faculty in
EECS. Each panel is presented by four successful women and there is time for questions and mingling.
Past topics have included:
- Publishing
- Networking
- Funding
Our next panel will be in spring quarter and will be on the topic
The truth about faculty life
Junior faculty from across the university will be on hand to talk about the transition from graduate school to an
academic career
Survival skills panels are jointly supported by CTSB and the EECS department.
Women in STEM Speaker Series
We are hosting a speaker series featuring successful women with careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
fields.
- Tracy Camp (March 14)
- Maria Bezaitis, Intel Research (April 15)
- Valerie Taylor (June 3)
For each speaker we will be hosting lunches with graduate student women from across the University. Lunches are
capped at ~10 participants to allow for in depth discussion. If you are interested in attending the lunch for any of
these speakers email Kate at kate[at]northwestern[dot]edu.
The Women in STEM Speaker Series is generously sponsored by a Community Building Grant from The Graduate
School at Northwestern.
Mentoring for Undergraduate Women in EECS Research
To encourage more women undergraduates to get involved in research, FREECS is offering $500 incentives for faculty to
hire undergraduate women to work on EECS related research projects. For more information, download the flyer. For
questions, or to apply, email nufreecs[at]gmail[dot]com.
Systematic Change Speaker Series
FREECS is committed to making sure Northwestern is a welcoming and supportive place for women in EECS. To that end
we are hosting a speaker and discussion series on this topic. Our next event is:
- Jane Margolis and Allan Fisher (May 12) There will be several opportunities for students and faculty
to interact with both speakers email nufreecs[at]gmail[dot]com if you are interested.
Grace Hopper Conference
Eight FREECS members attended the 2007 Grace Hopper Conference for women in computing. We hosted a panel discussion
on interdisciplinary research and manned a table with information about graduate programs at Northwestern. We all
learned a lot and had a great time.
Collaboration with SWE and ACM-W
We are working with SWE and ACM-W to help provide programming for undergraduate engineering students - especially those that
might be interested in EECS! In Spring Quarter FREECS and SWE will be co-hosting a panel for undergraduates about graduate
school and will be hosting mentoring events where undergraduates can get advice from graduate students and help on
admissions essays and grad school applications. Details coming soon!
Members of FREECS have also given talks to the undergraduate ACM-W club. If you would be willing to talk on a topic,
email Julia to volunteer.
Communiversity Day: (Saturday, April 12)
This year, Northwestern is hosting the first Communiversity Day where the public is invited to Northwestern. FREECS
will be demoing a variety of projects from the EECS department including:
- Virtual peers for children with autism
- Optics projects
- Computer modeling for middle schoolers (NetLogo)
- Social Networking software
Take Our Daughters to Work Day: (Thursday, April 24)
Every year, FREECS hosts a Take Our Daughters to Work workshop where daughters of NU faculty and staff can learn
about using NetLogo to model complex systems and to learn to program. The girls and the volunteers always have a greate
time. If you are interested in volunteering this year, email nufreecs[at]gmail[dot]com.
